User guide

Step by step: how to find matching funding programmes and partners for your project with the Transferkompass HC-H2 – and how to make the most of the results.

1

Getting started

The Transferkompass HC-H2 is free of charge. You need an account to search.

  1. Open transferkompass.hch2.de and click Log in.
  2. Switch to Register, enter your name, organisation and email address and choose a password (at least 8 characters).
  3. Optional: tick the newsletter box if you would like to hear about new features – and the box “visible as a partner in the network” if others should be able to have you suggested for matching projects.
  4. Confirm your email address via the link in the email you receive. Then you can log in.

Three ways to get there

After logging in you see the input field for your project straight away. Above it, the tab bar lets you choose how to start – hover over a tab to see a short explanation. On the far right you will find My area.

💡 TipYou can switch between German and English at the top right at any time. Funding programme data comes from the German funding database and is partly only available in German.
2

Describe your project

The clearer your description, the better the matches.

  1. Choose Short description and describe your project in the field “Your project, in your own words”.
  2. Click Find funding options.
  3. The Transferkompass now asks you a few short follow-up questions – for example about your federal state, area, project phase, your role and your funding needs. Simply pick the answer that fits.
  4. It then searches around 3,000 programmes from state, federal and EU sources as well as the German Research Foundation (DFG) and checks the key details live against the funding guidelines. This can take a moment.
✍️ How to write a good description Answer in 3–6 sentences: What are you developing? What will it be used for? How far along are you (idea, prototype, pilot)? Who is involved (research institution, company, start-up)?
Example: “At FZJ we are developing an iridium-free electrolysis catalyst. A lab prototype is running (TRL 4). For the step to pilot operation we are looking for funding and an industrial partner from plant engineering.”

The follow-up questions

Your answers feed directly into the search. For your role, for example, the Transferkompass distinguishes whether you are founding a start-up out of a research institution or university – it then also looks for programmes that are applied for via the institution.

🔒 Please no confidential detailsThe Transferkompass only needs general information. Do not enter invention details, patent contents, trade secrets or names of third parties. All data stays on Jülich infrastructure.

Reading the results

Each matching funding programme appears as a card with a traffic-light assessment.

The traffic light

● Green – high suitabilityA good fit, no exclusion criteria identified.
● Yellow – medium suitabilityA partial fit or there are uncertainties – check more closely.
● Red – low suitabilityLow suitability or an exclusion criterion identified.

What a card shows

Simplified view of a result card.

💡 More matchesBelow the list, 🔍 Show 5 more programmes loads further suggestions. Programmes whose deadline has already passed are hidden – you can show them with Show expired calls.

Foundations

If foundations match your idea, a separate summary card “🏛️ Foundations – … match your idea” appears below the results. Expand it to see the individual foundations with target group, type of funding and how to apply. Go to foundation → takes you to their website. Foundation details are in German.

💡 Foundations work differentlyFoundations publish fixed calls less often than federal, state or EU funders. Check the foundation's website to see whether a call is open or free applications are possible.
⚠ An assessment, not a commitmentThe traffic light is an automatic assessment. It does not replace a review by a funding advisor or the project management agency. Always read the funding guideline before applying.
4

Digging deeper

A programme looks interesting? Here is how to take the next step.

Ask follow-up questions

Click Questions? and ask in your own words, for example “Does this also apply to universities?” or “Can I apply for staff costs?”. The answer is based on the funding guideline; if needed, additional research is carried out.

Go to the source

To the funding guideline ↗ takes you straight to the funding body's original text – that is where the binding conditions are.

New programmes

If new programmes have been added to the Transferkompass in the last 7 days, you will see a turquoise line “… new funding programmes in the last 7 days” below the input box with Show all new →. The section “🆕 Fresh in the Transferkompass” on the start page also shows the newest programmes – grouped into Federal & state, EU and Foundations.

5

Finding partners

With Show potential partners, the Transferkompass suggests organisations that fit the programme and your project.

The suggestions are colour-coded so you can see how reliable they are:

💡 Become a partner yourselfWould you like to be suggested to others as a contact? Tick the partner box when registering or use “Become a partner” on the home page.
6

Inspiration

No concrete idea yet? Browse by topic and get inspired.

  1. Choose Inspiration.
  2. Pick an area (Energy, Health, Mobility, Digitalization, Environment, Production, Other) and/or enter a topic, e.g. “hydrogen”.
  3. Optional: tick 🆕 New programmes only to see only programmes from the last 7 days.
  4. Click Show programmes.

For each programme you can display an example project – an AI sketch of what a matching project could look like, with suitable partners. Here, too, you have Questions?, the PDF report, saving and sharing.

🏛️ All foundations at a glance shows all selected foundations, sorted by their main focus.

💡 Good to knowInspiration has no traffic light, because no concrete project is being assessed yet. Once you have found an idea, describe it via Short description and have it checked.

Frequently asked questions

Which programmes does the Transferkompass search?

Three sources of funding programmes: the German federal funding database with state and federal programmes, the European Commission's funding portal with all open EU calls (e.g. Horizon Europe, Digital Europe, Creative Europe) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) with its funding programmes (e.g. Research Grants, Emmy Noether, Research Units) and current calls. All three are updated every night, and expired calls are removed automatically. DFG programme descriptions are in German.
In addition, a selection of foundations for science, education and the environment appears as a separate summary card.

Can I find funding for basic research?

Yes. Since October 2026, the programmes and calls of the DFG are included, and ERC calls come via the EU funding portal. Most other programmes are application- and transfer-oriented – if your project also describes a step towards application, you will usually find additional matches there. DFG programmes are aimed at researchers at universities and research institutions.

Why does a programme say “Key details still unclear”?

The automatic check could not reliably read all details from the funding guideline. Under “Details & sources” you can see what is missing – please check there yourself.

Where does my data stay?

The website, database and AI run on systems of Forschungszentrum Jülich, without a commercial cloud and without tracking. Everything else is in the privacy policy (German).

How do I delete my account?

At the very bottom of the app, in the footer: Delete account. After entering your password, your account and everything in “My area” are deleted immediately.
